Movie of the Year 2011
Movie of the Year 2011

There have been a number of movies released this year that could all be considered contenders for the title of Movie of the Year 2011. We have had the X-Men prequel, X-Men: First Class which, although received criticism in some areas, was surprisingly pleasing and is bound to receive a sequel off of the back of its success. Then there was the latest Twilight offering and it was always going to be obvious that The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 was going to be a success at the box office due to the fanbase of the franchise. However, the movie received much criticism and is possibly the worst of the Twilight franchise to date.

We have also had a number of superhero offering. As well as the X-Men prequel, there has also been Captain America: The First Avenger, which was a good film but we were expecting so much more from it, and Thor, which was fairly disappointing, but what could you really expect from it. It was never going to be as good as those superhero movies before it and, considering the poor reception it received, it still managed to make over $400 million meaning a sequel is inevitable. The there is Green Lantern and the less said about that the movie the better. However, again it made enough money for Warner Bros. to consider making yet another superhero movie sequel.

We could talk about this year’s movie releases all day but we don’t have the time and you would get bored. So we will get down to it. The movie that we have voted as Movie of the Year 2011 is Rise of the Planet of the Apes. There are a number of reasons that this movie stands out for us and one of them is the fact that we were expecting it to be a huge flop. It was never going to be as bad as the 2001 Tim Burton attempt but we were still not expecting a great deal from it and boy were we wrong. Rise of the Planet of the Apes blew our minds.

Then there was the performance of Andy Serkis as Caesar the leader of the ape uprising. While many have been calling for Andy to be nominated for Oscar recognition (us being one of those) it is highly unlikely that he will. Too many people do not believe that what Andy Serkis does can be classed as real acting but we think he is an absolute star. There will never be anybody who can make motion capture seem so natural and real. Andy Serkis is the king of motion capture and his performance as Caesar was one of the best performances of the year and certainly made Rise of the Planet of the Apes as successful as it was.

Another person who deserves a mention but who is all too often skimmed over is John Lithgow. John’s performance as an Alzheimer sufferer is spot on and he brings a certain emotional element to Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Then there is Tom Felton, who is getting a reputation for playing bad guys. While his American accent was not the best, he does get to deliver that immortal line, made famous by Charlton Heston, “Take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape” and, while many have criticised the inclusion of this line, calling it cheesy and cringey, we loved it and the fact it acknowledges the brilliance of the original.

Finally a mention for the director of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, who brought the whole thing to life and did an absolutely fantastic job. Rupert Wyatt will be remembered for taking a franchise that many believed should be left alone and making it great once again. The way Rise of the Planet of the Apes ended leaves it open to a sequel and the only way the sequel will ever do justice is if Rupert Wyatt is in the director’s chair. There have already been talks of possible storylines and we hope they do not wait too long to bring us the sequel. Everybody involved in Rise of the Planet of the Apes did a great job and that is the reason that we have made Rise of the Planet of the Apes Movie of the Year 2011.

Now 20th Century Fox have signed up Andy Serkis to reprise his role of the leader of the apes, Caesar. Andy Serkis is being tipped for an Oscar nomination for the role and 20th Century Fox are going to wage a full campaign to help Andy become the first motion capture actor to win an Oscar.

Felton explained, “I saw Daniel about a week ago and I was completely blown away. He really does excel. It’s amazing as well how in one second, you see Harry Potter and he’s completely gone within a minute; you’re just looking at someone else. He’s doing a great job in shaking any previous attachment to his character. So, yeah. It’s definitely something that I’d like to do.”

Freida Pinto has revealed that she still gets extremely nervous around other celebrities and never knows what to say to them. Freida shot to fame following the success of Slumdog Millionaire back in 2008 but she has admitted that she still finds it awkward being a Hollywood star.

Pinto explained, “Of course, I was very starstruck. Anybody who would be in my position would have been starstruck. I had to train myself to be calm and composed if at all I saw Angelina Jolie walking down somewhere. It is difficult because it’s like living in a fairy tale.”

She added, “The biggest celebrities whom you have adored and been a fan of are in front of you - it is difficult to not be in awe. I felt like Alice in Wonderland. I mean I never thought I would meet Mick Jagger. I didn’t say anything. See this is the thing, I don’t know what to say. I just get very nervous and kind of retreated into my shell. I just said ‘I love your music’ and that’s about it. Then I left.”

Freida Pinto recently revealed how she finds it very awkward when she communicates with her boyfriend Dev Patel over Skype, as it makes her look ugly. Freida can currently be seen on the big screen in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, alongside James Franco and Tom Felton.

Harry Potter star Tom Felton is and probably always will be, best known for playing Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies but he is dead set on continuing to get big movie roles. Tom stars in the Planet of the Apes prequel, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and gets to utter the infamous Charlton Heston line “Get your hands off me you damn dirty ape”.

Felton took the time to discuss the movie a little, he explained, “The film is a very different and fresh look at the Planet of the Apes franchise. It’s a prequel; it gives an understanding of how everything happens. It’s really sort of a frank story where you have scientists testing various different trials on apes.”

He added, “There’s one particular ape [in whom the test] causes high intelligence; it increases his knowledge very, very quickly. This particular ape, Caesar, is in the facility where I work and I’m supposed to look after all the apes. But my character is a real piece of work. He actually makes Draco look very soft.”

It was recently revealed that Tom Felton is set to work with McFly member Tom Fletcher on his forthcoming music project. Felton can be seen in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, alongside James Franco and Freida Pinto, at cinemas, now.
Andy Serkis for Rise of the Planet of the Apes Oscar nod?
Andy Serkis for Rise of the Planet of the Apes Oscar nod?
There has been a lot of discussion recently about whether a motion capture performance is worthy of an Oscar nomination or not. Andy Serkis obviously believes it is, since he seems to do more of it than anyone and now Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt has added his voice to the argument.

Rupert said, “When you have an actor playing these roles - and that’s the beauty of performance-capture - it’s so very different from key-frame digital animation, because you have at the heart of the performance a terrific actor.” He added, “He is the kernel. He’s the one that you’re following and echoing in terms of the role. I mean, he plays Caesar in the same way that John Hurt played the Elephant Man beneath all of that make-up.”

Wyatt continued, “I think the fact that he’s been acknowledged for what he’s achieved in this role is a wonderful thing. So yeah, of course it’d be great [if Serkis received an Oscar nomination].” You can see Andy Serkis as Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes at the cinema now.

Actor Andy Serkis has revealed how he inspired director Peter Jackson to get on board with the advances in technology and start using performance capture. Andy claims that Peter initially only wanted him to do a voice over for Gollum in The Lord Of The Rings movies.

Andy explained, “Originally when I went off to work on The Lord of The Rings I got a call from my agent saying that I was just going to do a voice. But I couldn’t really approach it like that. To get Gollum’s voice I had to play the character.”

Serkis added, “I told Peter that was how I’d like to do it and when he was watching me moving around on set he said, ‘Stop everything. We are going to film Andy’s performance and then we are going to experiment with performance-capture’.”

Andy Serkis declared in 2010 that he could not see why the Academy Awards separate performance capturing acting from live action acting. He has also previously played King Kong and is currently on the big screen as Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
