January Jones defends Mad Men character Betty Draper
January Jones defends Mad Men character Betty Draper

Mad Men actress January Jones, who plays the character Betty Draper in the hit ABC television series, has admitted that she is regularly having to defend her character. January claimed that she felt like Betty was getting a bit of a hard time just lately.

Jones explained, “I find myself defending [Betty] a lot more often, just because people are pretty hard on her lately. All of her actions are justified. Her husband’s cheating on her, and then she finds out he’s not who he says he is. That probably warrants a divorce.”

She added, “And, you know, Sally (Kiernan Shipka) shouldn’t be masturbating at other people’s houses or she’s going to get slapped. I don’t always agree with her. [Betty’s] emotional maturity level is hard to understand - she doesn’t deal with certain situations very well.”

January JonesMad Men co star John Slattery recently spoke out in defence of the actress, after she was criticised by a former child actor on the show for being unapproachable, something which John completely disagreed with.

Mad Men season five is set to premiere in the US on March 25 on ABC before hitting the UK on Sky Atlantic on March 27.

January Jones came in for some criticism a few months back from the person who played Bobby Drapers in the hit television series. However, John Slattery, who plays Roger Sterling in Mad Men, has praised January Jones for her acting ability.

John explained to Shortlist, “I don’t think she is misunderstood by anyone else but that one kid. Coincidentally, that kid doesn’t play Bobby Draper anymore. Not because of what he said…They’ve had about five Bobby Drapers and they can’t seem to find one who doesn’t look straight into the lens.

He added, “I think the problem is that January is an incredible actress. She plays a formidable character, she’s not mother of the year, she has a hard relationship with that child and she’s horrible to him. It’s remarkable to watch her, actually.

Slattery then  went on to admit that he felt a little sorry for the child, as he too would have been scared by her. He continued, “That poor f**king kid, I’m not surprised she scared the hell out of him. She’d scare the hell out of me.”

Mad Men season five is set to hit ABC on March 25 before heading to the UK two days later on Sky Atlantic.
