Andrew Garfield Reveals How He Fell For Spider-Man Co-Star Emma Stone

Andrew Garfield has revealed how he fell for his Spider-Man co-star Emma Stone before they’d even started filming the movie.

The couple kept their relationship under wraps to start with but it’s thought that they began dating last summer, and in recent months they’ve been snapped out and about together in New York looking blissfully happy.

Now, Andrew has spoken about those first moments that he began to fall in love with Emma. Speaking to Mtv News, Garfield revealed: “We got on really well as people, in between takes. That was the fun stuff. In between, we’d just mess around and I felt, ‘Ah, this is different’. I wasn’t really aware of what was happening in the screen test. She keeps you on your toes and that wakes you up. That was the beginning.”

When Emma accepted the role of Gwen Stacy, Garfield was ecstatic and revealed that he was always excited for the days that he’d get to shoot scenes with her: “Those are the days I’d look forward to, you know? For [my character] Peter as well, because Peter goes through some horrible stuff in the movie. There’s some joy to be had when experiencing his first love.”

The Amazing Spider-Man opens in July 2012, and for the first time the Spider-Man franchise will begin to look more closely at Peter Parker’s childhood and the disappearance of his parents when he was young. The movie also stars Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Sally Field and Martin Sheen.

The Amazing Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield, who is set to portray the character Peter Parker aka Spider-Man in the forthcoming superhero movie, has revealed how Peter Parker tries to keep himself to himself in order to not get hurt. Andrew also reveals how he got into the mindset of his character.

Garfield explained to Total Film, “He’s a lone wolf… Erratic, angry, rebellious. It’s cool to be a nerd now. Peter is an outsider. Because that’s what he has to do to protect himself.  He was dropped once; he doesn’t want to be dropped again. It’s difficult to get close to him.”

He added, “The stunts are home grown and grass roots. I plastered my walls with page after page of artwork and spent hours trying to get my body as extreme as possible. I didn’t want to be a bulky guy. I wanted to be a skinny kid beating the crap out of big guys.”

The Amazing Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield, who plays Peter Parker aka Spider-Man in the forthcoming movie, has revealed how he felt the first time he wore the famous costume on set. Andrew admits that it was rather daunting at first but then the power of the suit took over.

Garfield explained to Perez Hilton, “Very self-conscious, because you’re practically naked. You’re just all out there! And that’s a really dangerous, brave, scary place to be. But after that first flush you feel the power of it, the power of not being seen, the power of the mask.”

He added, “Peter [Parker] becomes witty when he’s got that protective layer. It’s like he’s on a message board. He’s got the anonymity of the internet within that suit and he can say whatever the hell he likes and he can get away with anything.”

Andrew continued, “He can f**k with people and there’s no consequences because nobody knows who the hell he is. We all know how powerful and potentially dangerous that anonymity is.”

The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb has revealed how he believes that the Spider-Man origin story could last beyond just one movie. Marc claims that there is enough story there to spread over the course of a few films.

Webb explained to MTV News, “I wanted to give the audience something new. So that started off with getting underneath the parents’ story, which will unfold over probably a few movies. We don’t totally wrap up that story in this first movie. It’s sort of an ongoing mystery.”

He added, “[There are] obligations to the canon in terms of Uncle Ben and the spider-bite, but the conditions under which those things happen are very different. The character is evolving in a different way.

Marc continued, “It’s about finding a balance between iconic elements of the Spider-Man mythology - like how Uncle Ben’s death transforms him emotionally - but it happens in a different way. He’s bitten by a spider, but maybe it’s not a radioactive spider. Or maybe it is! You’ll have to see.”

Stone explained, “It’s a different incarnation of Peter Parker… I don’t think there’s much of a comparison. It’s a totally different version of Peter Parker than anyone’s ever seen. Andrew is a great actor and I think people are going to be pretty blown away by what they see.”

Andrew Garfield is set to appear on the big screen later this year as Peter Parker aka Spider-Man, in the Marc Webb reboot The Amazing Spider-Man. Andrew has been discussing his feelings about the Spider-Man costume, claiming that it feels quite liberating.

Garfield explained, “It was a mixed moment. I have to say, it was incredibly overwhelming, of course, but I didn’t quite identify with it because I — you know, one amazing thing about Spider-Man is [he’s] the only superhero where you can’t see any skin colour.”

He added, “I think that’s why he’s so, kind of, universally relatable and beloved, whereas Batman you can see it’s a white guy under the thing and whatever. I didn’t feel like me. There’s something kind of liberating about that.”

Andrew continued, “I think that’s pretty much how Peter Parker feels, as well. He’s like, ‘Oh, I’m not me anymore. I can be whatever I need to be or whatever I want to be.’ And that creates mischief, that creates…there’s a lot to talk about with that, as well. It was a fun role to play.”

She added, “I’ve just finished shooting a movie called The Gangster Squad that’s set in the ’40s. I love the fashion: men in trench coats and hats, women with pencilled eyebrows, corsets and lipstick - they really dedicated themselves to the look back then. It was such a glamorous era.”
